Artist’s Statement
Kieran Ingram is a classically trained figurative artist who completed
his studies in Florence, Italy.
His time spent studying in Florence amongst the work of the masters has provided
him with an appreciation of the role of the artist in observing and expressing
the subtleties of the human form and natural landscape.Since finishing his studies Kieran has focused on a series of charcoal figure
and landscape drawings. Kieran was brought up in Darlington and his landscapes
reflect his love of the Perth hills.
Kieran has spent the past years travelling and painting, winning many awards. In
late 2012 he spent six weeks as Fellowship Artist
(a six week residency) at Ballinglen
Arts Foundation in the north-west of the
Republic of Ireland
Methods and Materials
Kieran prefers to work directly from life as he feels that this is the only way
to truly capture the essence of his subjects. As a result he spends many hours
with the model or in the landscape.
He uses sharpened French charcoal which is uniquely suited to rendering lifelike
drawings with the highest level of precision and detail. The versatility of the
medium means that brushes and sponges can also be deployed to great effect. The
paper is a high quality handmade Italian cotton rag that is both lightweight and
very robust making it ideal for detailed drawings.
His oil paintings are completed on canvas in a traditional layered manner.
Impastoed lights are applied to a toned ground followed by glazing and scumbling
to achieve subtle tonal and colour shifts which enhance the sense of light and
space. The landscapes are often completed in a more 'impressionistic' manner
better suited to conveying the mood and effect of atmosphere in natural scenes.
